An acquaintance was recently discussing the difference between breaking up in the city and breaking up anywhere else. Here, he noted, everyone gets their business done in the public eye: couples scream and argue on the street, in the park, in the subway. And rarely are apartments ever private; with their tissue-thin walls, your neighbors definitely know if things with you and your partner are going well or not. This city is like a fishbowl. There’s simply no other way to do it.
Of course, Time Out NY added another option to the mix, with an entertaining little piece on the best break-up bars in New York [thanks to my classmate Alyson for bringing this to my attention]. There’s actually some brilliant advice in this fluff piece. For example, if your soon-to-be-ex is a screamer, take him or her to a loud sports bar where yelling isn’t out of place.
